How To Setup Your Brand New Mac

Like many, I gave into the Apple trend. I admit, I hated them - but I blame this all on my experience with them in high school and somewhat in University. I used them through Elementary school and all through High school, and used them occasionally at university if all of the PCs in the computer labs were taken. In high school, were forced to use those colorful "Tube-television" looking iMacs. These things ran OS9, and either sucked, or were just not set up correctly. They would crash at least twice a class... from doing basic surfing, and Claris Works. Instead of the blue screen of death, which Apple proudly doesn't have, we got the frozen screen of death. Being awesome computers, we had to find a paperclip to press the little tiny reset button.

After 4 more years of dissing Apples.. I got an iPod nano (which I later traded for an iPod video) from my friends for graduating.. and a few months later, I decided to get a Macbook, without having used OSX before! Why did I give in? No I didn't care about the looks.

  1. Size was perfect for me.. 13.3" Wide Screen
  2. The magnetic power supply
  3. I could install Windows XP on here also (which I planned on using more! but haven't even installed yet after 7 months.
  4. Built in Webcam
  5. A bit of peer pressure
  6. Free 2 GB iPod Nano

I wanted to get the 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook, but I had to settle for the 1.83 GHz because the store didn't have any left. It took me 45 mintues to get there, and I didn't want to come home empty handed. I also had to settle for the 2 GB iPod Nano, instead of the 4GB iPod Nano. Oh well, I saved money, upgraded my RAM, and I'm happy with what I have. It's pretty much taken over my main computer. I just use my Windows desktop to watch movies, sometimes do website work, and I use another computer for downloading. I'm looking to replace my desktop with a 20" iMac whenever OSX Leopard comes out. I love Macs now.

Honestly, when I first got my Macbook, I didn't care too much about it. It was nothing special (yet), and I was too lazy to learn new things. Then my friend came over, who'd been a Mac user for about a year, and showed me all the neat new things.

First thing I did was play with those stupid gadget applications:

  • iAlertU - Laptop Alarm which takes a screenshot of the thief.
  • MacSabre - Turn your Macbook into a light sabre!

Then my friend showed me the actual useful applications.

  • QuickSilver - Double tap the command button and open up anything you want without having to use your mouse/trackpad * MUST HAVE
  • Growl - Display messages on your screen when certain events happen.
  • Adium - The best multi-network instant messenger (no Webcam yet).
  • VirtueDesktops - For multiple desktops
  • FireFox - Just the browser I'm used to
  • OmniOutliner - To Keep track of what you have to do
  • AppZapper - Uninstall your programs easily
  • Xee - View your pictures easier

Other cool programs

Also, you can create your own scripts to do whatever you want. I'll post them up, along with instructions on how to set up QuickSilver and Growl. Scripts that I use are - Auto Mount to network drive on start up, and a script which transfers movie, picture, music and document files to their correct folders when the download has finished.

Stay tuned for plenty of Mac updates!
