Have you ever wondered how to find out what your IP address is?

Well first you must understand what an IP address is. Your IP address is just like your home address. It's a way of giving your computer or network an address or location on the internet. If you are in a network your computer could have two IP addresses, an internal network IP for your computer, and an external IP which identifies your home connection. You will need your external IP address to access your computer remotely through the internet. You will need your internal IP address to tell your router which computer has the service that you want to access, or to access your computers from within the network.

Well there are two ways to find your IPs, depending on how your network is set up. Please note that IP addresses have the format XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (where X's are digits, and each group can have 1-3 digits).

1. If you do not have a router and only one computer hooked directly to your modem. You may access your external IP Address, simply by going Start > Run and type 'cmd'. This will open the command prompt. Type 'ipconfig', and it will display your IP Address. Using 'ipconfig' inside a network will give you your internal IP address.

2. As stated earlier, if you have a router, you can access your internal IP if you type 'ipconfig' in the command prompt. To get access to your external IP address. You can access your router administration. Depending on your router you must type the IP address of your router to get access to it. Go to the Status tab, and it will be display your IP Address.3. Another way to find your IP would be to go to an Web site which test your speed, such as at Speakeasy.net. Just Google "Internet Speed Test" and you should find plenty of sites which will do it for you. Your external IP should be displayed also.
