Google AdSense channels is a great way to view detailed reporting on specific pages and ad units. This a proven method way to analyze your sites, and certain pages, and help you figure out where the best ad placements should be.
Google AdSense provides two types of channels, they are URL Channels, and Custom Channels.
What are URL Channels?
Channels are ways for you to track specific URLs that has Google AdSense ads and watch how they perform on a day to day basis. Example, say I want to track http://it.okaay.com and anything below that subdomain (ex. http://it.okaay.com/example etc.)
This is how to create URL channels:
-
Click on AdSense Setup Tab
-
Click on Channels
-
Click on URL channels
-
Click on Add new URL channels
-
Type the URL and click Add channels
-
Done
Custom Channels
Want to know where the best placement of your ads should be? Want to know which ads were clicked?
Custom channels will help you track unique ad units performance, similar to URL channels. The information you receive will tell you which one was clicked. Analyze the data to help you figure out where the best ad placement should be.
We like to use this naming scheme "sitename_position_adtype" so that way if we receive clicks we know which ad position was most effective. If you notice after a period of time that one of your ads aren't being clicked you can start experimenting with it and move it around the page. Trial and error!
This is how to create custom channels:
-
Click on AdSense Setup Tab
-
Click on Channels
-
Click on Add new custom channels
-
Enter the channel name and click Add channels
-
Done
Reports
Give an hour for Google Adsense to update your newly created channels and if you setup the channels properly you should be able to see your channels under Reports Overview
