There's a known bug out there that Microsoft's own LifeCam VX-3000 will not properly work on Microsoft's Windows Vista 64 when you have over 4GB of RAM. I thought that since they were both Microsoft products, I could easily get it to work. What I got was lots of freezing, restarting, and frustration. I did end up figuring out how to fix it though.
The LifeCam VX-3000 is a very clear camera, compared to my 3-4 year old Logitech QuickCam Zoom. However, when I tried to use it on my new computer, a Vista Ultimate 64-bit computer with 4GB of RAM, it didn't work. Installing the camera would go through without a problem, using the latest software driver from Microsoft's website. It then asked me to plug in my USB Webcam and I did. After that it makes you go through the steps of testing your webcam and speakers for incoming and outgoing sound, and video.
The first step is making sure I can hear from my speakers. Check.
The next step was making sure I could talk into the built-in LifeCam microphone. Check.
The next step was to test video, but I couldn't even get to that step because once I pressed next, it freezes! And being Vista, it tries to find a resolution to the problem, and even when I didn't want to, and just close the program, it wouldn't. It would eventually go away after 10-15 minutes, or after I restarted.
After updating my motherboard chipset drivers to update the USB drivers, I got a little bit further. I saw a black screen! Even before, I could see my webcam turn on, because the green light on the top of the VX-3000 would turn on. Still no video, and still crashes my computer.
I searched on the net and found a forum. Basically, Microsoft does know about the problem, and they have developed a hot fix for it, which isn't really readily available. You have to send them a message with their online form here. They'll send you a fix within a few hours. Microsoft will send you a link and password in your email that supposedly only lasts one week.
Install the hot fix. Restart, and everything should work fine! It did for me on two occasions!
Hi All
I had the problem running LifeCam vx3000 on Vista and resolved it by finding out if you have Nero installed it causes the problem,so uninstall Nero and do a fresh install of the VX3000 best if you get rid of your old first instalation of the VX3000 and ensure you set your Display to 16 bit colours and reinstall the NX3000 program using the update LC14 update from microsoft and Hidey Ho Ho your webcam works dont forget to SMILE.
Cheers
